Softball: Hawks Drop Season Opener to Pacific Lutheran at Spring Games

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Roger Williams University Softball team fell to Pacific Lutheran on Friday morning, 10-1, to open up their season at Hancock Park during Spring Break.
 
The Lutes out hit the Hawks 9-1 in the game, while also drawing seven walks in the contests. Paige Wilson struck out nine for the Lutes, while the Hawks as a team combined for only two. Raegen Germano picked up the loss, falling to 0-1 to open the season.
 
At the plate, Zoe Smithson went 3-for-4 with four RBIs in the contest, while hitting a double and triple. Brooke Tilson also had a pair of hits with a double, while Brookelyn Gutierrez went 1-for-2 with a double and a pair of RBIs
 
For the Hawks, Kayleigh O'Connor went 1-for2 in the game with a RBI double that scored the only run of the game for RWU. Kelsey Burr reached base twice with a pair of walks.
 
After a pair of scoreless innings for both sides, In the bottom of the third, Pacific Lutheran had a runner on first after a Syan Yamamoto walk. Smithson then hit a triple into center field, bringing Yamamoto around to score. RWU answered in the top of the fourth inning, with Burr reaching on a walk. Calysa Moody then came in as a pinch runner. Following a fly out and strike out, O'Connor hit a double to center, bringing in Moody, before being caught running to third.
 
In the bottom of the fourth the Lutes, tallied six runs, with the first two coming off a Gutierrez double to Center field to bring in Tilson and Morgan Calcagno. After a passed ball, Yamamoto was put on second and Gutierrez on third. Following a Yamamoto walk, Smithson hit a single down the right field line, bringing in another pair for the Lutes. An error by the Hawks pitcher allowed another run to score, before a groundout to shortstop allowed the run to score.
 
Pacific Lutheran added a pair of runs in the fifth, after Smithson hit a double through the middle with the bases loaded, bringing a pair across to invoke the run rule.
 
Roger Williams (0-1, 0-0 CNE) will face North Central at 1:45 pm at Hancock Park in Clermont, Fla. later this afternoon.
