CLERMONT, Fla. – The Roger Williams University Softball team earned their first win of the season on Friday afternoon when they defeated North Central 2-1 in a competitive matchup at the Spring Games in Hancock Park.
Kiera Quadros picked up the first win of the season for the Hawks after pitching a complete game, striking out six and allowing five hits with no walks. The Cardinal's Sam Schilf allowed two runs off three hits over five innings before the Cardinals eventually turned to Juliana Maude in relief.
Hailey Williams led the way for the Hawks, finishing 1-for-1 with two walks, a pair of stolen bases, and came in to score the game-tying run.
Kelsey Burr and
Vianna Chamberlin each added a hit for the Hawks, while
Christina Denovellis and
Kayleigh O'Connor earned the RBIs.
For North Central, Hailey Morsovillo broke the deadlock in the top of the sixth inning, following a Sarah Lynch double to centerfield, the only extra-base hit in the contest, Morsovillo then hit a single through the left side of the infield to bring home Lynch and give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.
The Hawks responded in the bottom half of the inning, with Williams hitting a single and then stealing second base for the second time. A passed ball and Burr single put runners at the corners as Maude game into the matchup in relief, with
Shannon Starratt reaching on a fielder's choice, loading the bases. A drawn walk by Denovellis and O'Connor being hit by a pitch put the Hawks ahead heading into the seventh.
The Cardinals threatedned in the seventh after a leadoff single by Kayla Crabtree, but Quadros remained composed, forcing a strikeout, an out at second on a fielders choice, and a strikeout swinging to end the contest.
North Central drops to 0-2 on the year with the loss while Roger Williams (1-1, 0-0 CNE) will open up Friday's pair of contests against Belhaven.
