Softball: Hawks Drop Saturday Opener to #14 Belhaven

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Roger Williams University Softball team fell to #14 Belhaven in their first game of the day on Saturday, 7-4, at The Spring Games at the DiamondPlex.
 
For Belhaven, Macy Funderburk spun a complete game, striking out five with four runs scored, two earned, and a pair of walks. Skye Merrow started in the circle for Roger Williams going 2.0 innings with three earned runs and three walks allowed. Sophia Bruno picked up the loss, going three innings with three earned runs, off five hits and a walk.
 
At the dish, Ellie Jones, went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a double. Lauren Dunbar also added a pair of hits and an RBI in four at bats, with Jordan Kanipe also recording two hits. Reagan Bryan and Anna Caime each had a pair of RBIs for the Blazers.
 
The Hawks offense was powered by Hailey Williams who registered three hits, including a double, and came around to score twice in the contest. Kelsey Burr, Lucy Maurao, Caroline Thomas, and Ashley Klingberg each added a hit, while Shannon Starratt had the lone RBI in the contest for RWU.
 
Roger Williams struck in the top half of the first, with Williams hitting a double to center field, After Williams advanced to third, a wild pitch, brought Williams home giving the Hawks a 1-0 lead.
 
A scoreless second inning brought the Hawks up in the top half of the third. With bases loaded Starratt hit a sacrifice fly to right field, bringing in one, shortly after an error by the left fielder allowed for O'Connor to reach safely, bringing in McKenzie Foley and Williams.
 
Belhaven responded with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning as a run scored after a Jones single, and Colby Hollinger knocked a single into center field, bringing in a pair, and cutting the deficit down to one.
 
Roger Williams maintained their lead until the bottom of the sixth, when the Blazers saw, Bryan hit a single, bringing in two, and advancing to second on the throw. With Bryan standing on third, a wild pitch allowed her to score ahead of another run coming in a few batters later with Dunbar bringing in the RBI.
 
Roger Williams (1-2, 0-0 CNE) will face off against Kean on Saturday afternoon to round out the day.
