WINTER HAVEN, FL. – The Roger Williams University Softball team secured a 5-2 victory over Kean University on Saturday at The Spring Games held at the DiamondPlex.
Pitching for Roger Williams,
Raegen Germano (Old Tappan, N.J.) went the distance, throwing a complete game while allowing five hits, two runs (one earned), and five walks, striking out four batters. Kean's Nikki Lusnia took the loss, giving up five runs (four earned) on six hits in just one inning of work before being relieved by Anabella Farinha, who pitched five shutout innings with two strikeouts and two walks.
Kean took an early lead in the first inning when Kylie Petak doubled and later scored on a single by Maya Thompson, making it 1-0. In the second, Natalie Stannard reached on an error before advancing to third, ultimately scoring on a bases-loaded walk to Andee Perseponko, extending Kean's lead to 2-0.
Roger Williams answered back with an explosive five-run bottom of the second inning.
Christina Denovellis (Rocky Hill, Conn.) led off with a double and scored on a single up the middle by
Shannon Starratt (Lake George, N.Y.).
Vianna Chamberlin (East Providence, R.I.) followed with a single. Later Chamberlin scored the second run for the Hawks off of a throwing error.
Jamie Wells (Castle Rock, Colo.) brought in another run with an RBI single, allowing Starratt to score a run.
Ashley Klingberg (Yorkville, Ill.) added to the rally with a run-scoring hit, and
McKenzie Foley (Hanover, Mass.) delivered the biggest blow with a two-run double, putting Roger Williams ahead 5-2.
The remainder of the game was a defensive battle, with Germano keeping Kean's offense in check. The Hawks' defense stepped up in key moments, stranding multiple Kean baserunners and preserving the lead.
Roger Williams improves to 2-2 on the season, while Kean falls to 4-4. The Hawks will look to build on this momentum as they continue to play at The Spring Games, facing Alfred next at 11:30 am on Monday, March 10th.
