WINTER HAVEN, FL. – The Roger Williams baseball team fell to Umass Dartmouth on Sunday afternoon, 5-2, in their fourth game of nine total of their Spring Break trip.
Ray Boutiette recorded the win for the Corsairs, pitching eight innings, allowing just six hits and two earned runs. Boutiette racked up eight strikeouts to just one walk in the win. For the Hawks,
Nick Gleason will record the loss, as he pitched five innings, allowing four runs (three earned) and five hits. Gleason added six strikeouts to two walks in his outing.
In the hitting department, Sam Weigal led the way for the Hawks in the loss, going 2-4 with a homerun.
Nick Sheehan also recorded two hits, one of which being a triple where he would come around to score. For the opponent, Matt Tempone recorded two hits with an RBI. Cooper Wixon would also go 2-4 with an RBI as well.
After two innings of scoreless baseball, Umass Dartmouth got things going in the top of the 3
rd, behind a Matt Tempone RBI single. The Corsairs would add another run via an error, with Brett Baker coming in to score to make the game 2-0.
After three more scoreless innings for both sides, a Cooper Wixon single would expand the opponent's lead even further, to 3-0. UMD was not done yet, as they would tack on another run following a passed ball, with Chance Checca coming around to score. Brett Baker would finish off the scoring for the opponent with a sacrifice fly, bringing Scott Cromack in the process. Following the top half of the sixth inning, the Corsairs would lead over the Hawks, 5-0.
Roger Williams would respond in the bottom half of the sixth, as
Nick Sheehan would kick off the inning with a leadoff triple. Following a groundout,
Sam Weigel would single to drive in Sheehan, putting the Hawks on the board.
The two teams would go scoreless for the 6
th and 7
th innings, however in the bottom half of the eight,
Sam Weigel would come through again, this time with a solo homerun, to bring the Hawks to within three, 5-2. The teams would go scoreless in the 8
th and 9
th, securing the 5-2 victory for Umass Dartmouth.
Roger Williams will have an off day on Monday, and return back to action on Tuesday, March 11
th where they will face Rhodes. The Hawks will be looking to snap their three-game losing skid in the matchup.
