Baseball: Roger Williams Prevails in Extra Innings in a Battle of the Hawks

HARTFORD, CONN. – The Roger Williams baseball team downed Hartford on Monday afternoon, with the Hawks pulling out a 6-3 win in eight innings at Fiondella Field. The seven-inning game was forced to go into extra innings following a 3-3 tie after seven. The Hawks bats would get going in the top half of the eighth to help secure the Conference of New England victory.

Roger Williams starter Lucas Lariviere went six innings, allowing three earned runs on seven hits while striking out four. He handed the ball to Ryan Camp, who pitched two scoreless innings and earned the win to improve to 3-0 on the year. Hartford starter Anthony Bubba went seven innings, allowing only one earned run on seven hits. Tyler Blumetti would come in to relieve Bubba of his pitching duties in the eighth, allowing three runs which would give him the loss and drop his record to 2-3.

Roger Williams got on the board in the second inning with a solo homer from Will Florio, who later went deep again in the eighth to give RWU the lead. After Hartford tied the game at 1-1 in the third, RWU pulled back ahead in the sixth behind a two-run double by Sam Weigel. Hartford clawed back with solo home runs by Joe Ciccone in the sixth and Ryan Knight in the seventh to force extras.

In the eighth, Florio crushed his second home run of the day to put the Hawks back on top, and Dennis Folan followed with a two-run homer of his own to give RWU a comfortable 6-3 cushion. Camp would then retire Hartford in order in the bottom half to seal the win.

Florio led the offense with a 2-for-3 day including two homers and two RBIs, while Folan and Weigel each drove in a pair. Noah Hester also collected two hits and stole a base. For Hartford, Ciccone and Knight each homered and accounted for all three runs.

With the win, Roger Williams moves to 11-14 (4-5 CNE), while Hartford falls to 12-14 (4-3 CNE). The two teams are set to face off again later today in the second game of their doubleheader.
