BRISTOL, R.I. - The Roger Williams softball team picked up a 6-3 win over the University of New England in the second game of their Thursday doubleheader at Paolino Field. After falling behind early, the Hawks responded with a pair of big innings to take control and never looked back.
The Nor'easters jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a two-run homer to center field by Emma Michaud. Michaud added another RBI with a double in the third inning, cutting the Hawks' lead to 4-3, but that would be UNE's final run of the day. Michaud finished 2-for-3 with all three of UNE's RBIs.
Roger Williams responded with four runs in the bottom of the second. Caroline Thomas led off with a double and came around to score on Christina Denovellis RBI single. A wild pitch brought in another run before Hailey Williams capped the inning with a two-run double to right center. In the fourth, Shannon Starratt and Vianna Chamberlin delivered back-to-back solo home runs to extend the lead to 6-3, giving the Hawks all the cushion they would need.
On the mound, Keira Quadros earned the win for RWU, improving to 7-2 on the season. She went six strong, giving up just three runs on three hits while striking out 13. In the fourth inning, Quadros would make program history by recording her 100th career strikeout. Skye Merrow came on in the seventh to shut the door, earning her first save of the season. For UNE, Lizzie Brytowski took the loss, surrendering six runs on seven hits and six walks over 3.1 innings.
Offensively, the Hawks were led by Starratt, who homered and reached base twice, and Williams, who drove in two runs with a double and added another single. Chamberlin also had a solo shot and a run scored. RWU finished the game with eight hits and played clean defense, committing no errors.
With the win, Roger Williams improves to 17-9 overall and 8-2 in conference play. They'll look to keep the momentum rolling as they take on Suffolk tomorrow for a CNE matchup.
