BOSTON, Mass. — Raegen Germano pitched a complete-game shutout and Roger Williams University used early offense to secure a 4-0 victory over Suffolk University in the opener of Friday's Conference of New England (CNE) softball doubleheader at Carr Diamond.
Germano (6-4) was sharp in the circle, allowing just two hits over seven innings while striking out five and walking two. The pitcher faced 25 batters, retiring 13 on flyouts and three on the ground. Suffolk's Lily Newhall (6-5) threw a complete game as well, giving up 10 hits and four runs, two of them earned, while striking out three and walking one.
The Hawks were led at the plate by Lucy Maurao, who doubled twice, drove in a run, and scored twice. Hailey Williams went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while Shannon Starratt added two hits, including a late double. Kayleigh O'Connor tripled in the second, and Jaime Wells and Vianna Chamberlin each added a hit in a balanced 10-hit attack.
Suffolk (11-13, 6-2 CCC) got a first-inning double from Ava Brandow and a third-inning single from Catherine Carignan, but couldn't mount a sustained threat against Germano.
Roger Williams jumped ahead early with a two-run first inning. Williams led off with a single and scored on Maurao's RBI double. After Starratt singled to center, Maurao came around to score on a throwing error by the center fielder to make it 2-0. In the third, Maurao doubled again and later scored on a passed ball, pushing the lead to 3-0. The Hawks tacked on their final run in the fourth when Wells singled, advanced on a sacrifice, and scored on a two-out RBI single from Williams.
The Rams had limited opportunities, managing just four baserunners and leaving runners stranded in four different innings. Brandow's two-out double in the first was their best scoring chance, but Germano worked out of the jam and did not allow another Suffolk runner past second base.
Roger Williams (18-9, 9-2 CNE) will take on Suffolk in game two later this afternoon.
