Softball: Hawks Down UNE in Game One in Dominant Fashion

Roger Williams University opened up their doubleheader against the University of New England in dominant fashion on Thursday afternoon, securing a 16-1 win in just five innings at Paolino Field. A 13 run second inning was the driving force behind the Conference of New England win.

The first inning was jumpstarted by a two-run home run to left field from center fielder Vianna Chamberlin, scoring Shannon Starratt to give RWU a quick 2-0 lead. However, if the second inning the Hawks would rattle off 12 hits leading to 13 runs. The Hawks saw RBI contributions from nearly every part of the lineup in the second inning. Starratt delivered a three-run homer of her own to center field, Chamberlin drew a bases-loaded walk, and Caroline Thomas chipped in a two-run single as part of her 2-for-4, two-RBI effort. Catcher Ashley Klingberg also had a standout day at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two RBIs, a stolen base, and three runs scored.

On the mound, RWU starter Raegen Germano stuck out six over 3.1 innings while allowing just one hit, which came via a solo home run to UNE's Hannah Irons in the fourth. She would secure her fifth win of the season in the outing. Natalie Lundari would appear in relief for Germano, pitching 1.2 scoreless innings without allowing a hit. UNE would manage only one total hit in the game.

Roger Williams' offense racked up 18 hits from 11 different batters, including multi-hit performances from Starratt, Chamberlin, Thomas, and Hailey Williams. The Hawks also capitalized on baserunning opportunities, with two stolen bases and on a passed ball and fielding error for additional runs.

With the victory, Roger Williams improves to 16-9 overall and 7-2 in CNE play. This win marked game one of their doubleheader against the University of New England, with game two set to follow later in the afternoon.
