BOSTON, Mass. — Roger Williams University dropped a tight 2-1 contest to Suffolk University on Friday in the nightcap of a doubleheader at Carr Diamond, as a walk-off double from Diana Rucinski in the bottom of the seventh sealed the win for the Rams.
Suffolk (12-13, 6-4 CNE) broke a 1-1 tie in the final frame when Lily Newhall led off with a double to center field and came around to score on Rucinski's gap-shot to left center. The victory capped a strong outing by starting pitcher Cynthia Rucinski, who tossed a complete game, allowing eight hits and striking out three for her sixth win of the season.
Roger Williams had tied the game in the top of the seventh when Lucy Maurao tripled down the left field line and came home on a two-out RBI single by Vianna Chamberlin. Maurao finished 2-for-4 with a triple, while Hailey Williams also added a pair of hits for the Hawks, who stranded 10 runners in the game.
Kiera Quadros went the distance for Roger Williams, allowing seven hits and just one earned run over 6.2 innings, striking out four in the loss.
Suffolk first got on the board in the fourth inning on a ground-rule double by Newhall that brought home Julia Mills, who had reached on a single and advanced on a throwing error.
Despite putting runners in scoring position multiple times, the Hawks were unable to break through against Rucinski until the seventh. Suffolk's defense held firm, aided by clean fielding and timely outs.
The two teams split the doubleheader, with Roger Williams (18-10, 9-3 CNE) winning the opener earlier in the afternoon. Wentworth is the next oppnent for the Hawks, on Tuesday, Apr. 22, for a doubleheader in Boston. The Hawks will then host Western New England on Senior Day on Saturday, Apr. 26.
