BOSTON – It took extra innings, with the Wentworth Leopards outlasting the Roger Williams University Softball team, 4-3, at Carr Diamond in conference of New England (CNE) action.
Wentworth (14-17, 4-7 CNE) saw Katelin Howe go 3-for-4 with Lexi Lefkowski going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a double. Kyla Igawa, Lauren Trostel, and Brianna Miller each had a double, with Miller having two RBIs.
Roger Williams saw
Vianna Chamberlin go 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs while
Christina Denovellis had an RBI going 2-for-3 in the game.
Shannon Starratt also had a hit with four at bats.
Hailey Williams came around to score twice for the Hawks.
In the circle, the Leopards' Jess Rowe (3-3) picked up the win going 8.0 innings with five hits, three walks, and five strikeouts while allowing one earned run, three total. For the Hawks''
Raegen Germano (6-5) fell with 7.2 innings of work allowing two earned runs, with four scoring total. Germano struck out seven while allowing four walks.
The Hawks Opened the scoring with Williams standing on third after a flyout by Starratt.
Vianna Chamberlin then came to the plate and hit a single over to third with two outs, but was able to beat the throw allowing the run to score.
Wentworth answered in the bottom half of the second inning. After a leadoff double by Trostel to left center field, Calson then hit a ball to short, but a throwing error by the Hawks' allowed for Trostel to come home as it went wide of third. The Leopards tacked on another run in the third, with Lefkowski's double to left, bringing in Howe as they took a 2-1 lead.
It was then Roger Williams' turn to respond in the top of the fourth, with Starratt standing on second after an error and a wild pitch, but
Christina Denovellis hit a single through the right side of the infield, that brought in the game tying run.
Wentworth had an opportunity to score in the bottom half of the sixth, with runners on second and third, but Germano was able to force three straight outs, to end the inning. The Hawks had an opportunity to do the same with two outs and runners on second and third, but Williams popped up in her at bat to end the inning and force extras.
In extra innings, the Hawks converted on their opportunity as Williams was brought home after Starratt's fly out advanced her to third and Chamberlin then his a single to right center field.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Leopards had two outs and trailed by one with the bases loaded, but Miller hit a walk off triple to left center field to bring in three runs to win the game, 4-3.
