Box Score BOSTON – The Roger Williams University Softball team fell to Wentworth in game two of their Conference of New England (CNE) doubleheader, 6-5, on Tuesday afternoon at Carr Diamond.
Wentworth saw Julie Schriver go three innings giving up 1 earned run with four runs, with three hits and two walks, while allowing one home run. Julia Malowitz (6-8) picked up the win, spinning 4.0 innings, while giving up five hits with three strikeouts and one earned run.
Kiera Quadros threw 5.0 innings, allowing five earned runs, with a walk, and nine hits.
Ava Faibanks (2-2) entered in the final inning for the Hawks, closing out the contest, but giving up the lead with a walk and hit allowed.
Lexi Lefkowski had a hit, and two RBIs in the game, while Kyla Igawa and Lauren Trostel each had a hit and one RBI. Katie Kranz had two hits and an RBI for the Leopards. Roger Williams saw
Shannon Starratt go 4-for-4 in the game with three RBIs,
Vianna Chamberlin had one hit, a two run shot, and came around to score.
Hailey Williams,
Lucy Maurao, and
Ashley Klingberg each had a hit.
Similarly to game one, the Hawks struck first, with Williams reaching on a walk, before Starratt knocked a double to right center field to bring her in from first. In the third inning the Hawks added three more runs, with Klingberg coming in from second base off a Starratt single. With Starrat standing on first, Chamberlin then hit a home run over the left center field wall giving the Hawks a 4-0 lead.
In the bottom half of the third inning the Leopards brought in two runs, with Lefkowski hitting a single up the middle, brining in Miller and Kranz. In the top of the fifth, the Hawks managed to load the bases, but Malowitz was able to get Chamberlin swinging before Denovellis flew out to right as the Hawks left the bases loaded.
Wentworth added a run of a Igawa double to left to pull within one in the bottom of the fith inning, before adding three in the bottom of the sixth inning. Medalia hit a double to left center, and was followed by Trostel who knocked in the game-tying run. An error allowed Trostel to score, before Kranz hit a single to left center field to take a 6-4 lead.
In the top of the seventh inning, Klingberg hit a single through the left side to reach, followed by a fielder's choice that was unable to get Klingber at second base. With one out, Starratt hit a single up the middle, bringing in Klingberg. Another fielder's choice, put runners on first and second with two outs, but the Leopards were able to hold on as Denovellis flew out to center field.
Roger Williams (18-12, 9-5 CNE) will return to action on Saturday, Apr. 26 at 12:00 pm when they host Western New England for Senior Day on Paolino Field. The Hawks will then take on Nichols on Sunday, Apr. 27 to round out their CNE slate.
