DARTMOUTH, MASS. - The Roger Williams University Softball team came up just short against UMass Dartmouth on Friday afternoon, falling 2-1 in a tightly contested non-conference matchup.
UMass Dartmouth took an early lead in the bottom of the third inning when Larissa Piessens singled up the middle and later scored on an RBI double from RaeLynn Perregaux. The Corsairs added an insurance run in the fifth, capitalizing on a sacrifice fly by Olivia Silva to bring home Kinu Takasugi and extend the lead to 2-0.
Roger Williams struggled to generate offense early against the Corsairs pitcher, Lily Routhier, who pitched a complete game for UMass Dartmouth. The Hawks tallied just two hits, one each from Lucy Maurao (Holliston, Mass.) and Vianna Chamberlin (East Providence, R.I.), and left eight runners on base over the course of the game. Chamberlin stole a base in the sixth and later scored on a fielding error, putting RWU on the board.
A late rally in the top of the seventh allowed Hailey Williams (Vernon, Conn.) to get the tying run to third base after a single by Maurao. However, the Hawks were unable to push across the equalizer. Shannon Starratt (Lake George, N.Y.) had a flyout to right field that ended the Hawks comeback attempt.
On the mound, Raegan Germano (Old Tappan, N.J.) took the loss despite a strong showing, allowing just one earned run over four innings with three strikeouts. Keira Quadros (East Providence, R.I.) pitched two solid innings in relief, giving up one run on three hits.
For UMass Dartmouth, Routhier improved to 8-2 on the season, scattering two hits and six walks across seven innings while striking out one.
With the loss, Roger Williams falls to 18-13 on the season, remaining 9-5 in the Conference of New England. The Hawks will look to regroup as they head over to Nichols College on Sunday, April 27th, for their next conference matchup against the Bison at 1:00pm and 3:00pm.
