BRISTOL, R.I. — The Roger Williams University Softball team scored early and never looked back in a 4–1 win over UMass Dartmouth on Thursday afternoon at Paolino Field, as they rounded out the regular season.
Kelsey Burr recorded a pair of hits with two RBIs, while Hailey Williams and Shannon Starratt each added hit. Christina Devovellis and Ava Fairbanks each had a hit and an RBI. Jaime Wells, Ashley Klingberg, and Kayleigh O'Connor each added a hit.
For the Corsairs, RawLynn Perregaux, Chaylin Cruz Salgado, Sydney Menz, and Emma Talpey each had a hit, with the lone run coming from Talpey crossing home plate.
The Hawks plated runs in each of the first three innings to take a commanding lead. A first-inning RBI single by Fairbanks opened the scoring before Denovellis and Burr each delivered run-scoring hits in the second and third innings, respectively. Burr's two-RBI single down the left-field line proved to be the difference-maker, extending the lead to 4–0.
Skye Merrow (1–1) earned her first win of the season, holding UMass Dartmouth (20–16, 7-9 LEC) hitless over three innings of relief. She struck out one and retired nine of the ten batters she faced. Starter Natalie Lundari worked the first three innings, allowing three hits and five walks but escaping without allowing a run. Raegen Germano closed out the game, surrendering one run in the seventh.
UMass Dartmouth threatened early, loading the bases in the fourth inning, but the Hawks' defense held firm with back-to-back fielder's choices cutting down runners at the plate as Merrow entered in relief. The Corsairs finally broke through in the seventh when Talpey stole home..
Corsairs starter Lily Routhier (8–3) pitched all six innings, allowing four earned runs on nine hits with one walk and one strikeout.
Roger Williams (22-16, 11-7 CNE) will await the bracket of the Conference of New England (CNE) Tournament, set to begin on Tuesday, May 6.
