BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Baseball team remained alive in the race for a Conference of New England (CNE) Tournament birth, as the Hawks used a five run bottom of the eight to secure an 8-7 win.
For the Hawks,
Noah Hester went 2-or-4 on the day with an RBI and a walk, while
Ethan Keeney went 2-for-3 at the dish, coming around to score twice.
Owen Hibbard brought in two RBIs in the contest.
Jack Gamache had two hist for the Golden Bears, as well as a sacrifice fly in the outing, to go with another RBI. John Bova, Corey Kilroy, Leo Paragarino, Connor Cowern, and Greg Nivison each had a hit and one RBI.
On the mound,
Charles Ennis earned his first win of the season, going 2.0 innings in relief, allowing one hit and a walk, with one run coming around to score.
Lucas Lariviere picked up the start, striking out six, with five earned runs allowed, six total, with seven hits and one walk.
Ryan Camp finished it out for Roger Williams, pitching the ninth, striking out a pair.
For Western New England (20-18, 7-8 CNE) Jared Kuryan took the mound to start going 4.1 innings, giving up two earned runs, off three walks, and a pair of hits, striking out five. Tanner Wall picked up the loss, pitching the final 3.1 innings, giving up five runs, one earned, with a strikeout and five hits.
After the first three innings went by scoreless, the Golden Bears were the first to strike, with Bova reaching after a hit by pitch, a ground out advanced hit to second, Kilroy knocked a single to center field, bringing Bova in. The runs continued to accumulate, as Cowern hit a ball to shortstop that was misplayed and allowed Kilroy to score. Nivison then his a single to the following batter bringing in a run, while Gamache singled on a bunt to give WNE a 4-0 lead.
In the fifth, the Golden Bears saw Bova send a ball over the outfield fence in the top half of the inning, pushing the lead to five. In the bottom of the fifth the Hawks got three runs back, with
Ty Cali bringing in a run with a bases-loaded walk. Hester then hit a single to left centerfield with
Will Florio drawing another bases-loaded walk to add one more before the end of the inning.
With the Golden Bears scoring runs in the top half of the seventh and eight, the Hawks trailed 7-3 heading to the bottom of the eighth. With one out,
Chris Faraca hit a single to right field, followed by
Dennis Folan who put runners on the corners.
Ethan Keeney then hit a single to center field, bringing in Faraca. A ground out put runners at second and third for Cali, who reached as the ball was thrown by the shortstops throw to first went high and out of play, adding another two runs. After a Hester walk, Hibbard hit a two RBI double to left center field to take the lead.
Camp then came in to close the matchup out for the Hawks.
Roger Williams (14-20, 6-9 CNE) will close out the regular season against Western New England in Game Two.
