BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Field Hockey team defeated Lasell University, 6-1, picking up their first win of the season Sunday morning on Bayside Field.
The Hawks were ready to roll with the 11:00 am start time, outshooting the Lasers 31-4, putting 19 shots on target. The Lasers combined for 13 saves between, McKenna Ecker's six, and Brooke Gaudet's seven. Both teams had multiple opportunities at penalty corners, with RWU earning eight to the Lasers' four.
Individually, Roger Williams saw six different goal scorers in the matchup, with Hannah Timbrouck (Kingston, N.Y.) leading the way with four points in the match.
The Hawks struck in the opening five minutes, with Emma Sheldon (Suffield, Conn.) scoring her first goal of the season, 4:14 into the contest. Just under 1:40 later, Timbrouck put her first tally of the season on the board, giving RWU a 2-0 lead after the opening 5:51.
Just 53 seconds into the second frame, Chelsea King (Albany, N.Y.) was on the receiving end of a pass from Timbrouck, which King was able to put past Ecker in the net. In the 21st minute of action, senior Lily Tobin (Sandwich, Mass.) tipped in a pass from Timbrouck into the back of the cage, scoring her first of the season, giving the Hawks a 4-0 lead heading into the halftime break.
First-year Brodie Loveland (West Milford, N.J.) tallied her first career goal,1:44 into the half, before the Lasers were able to get on to the board in the 38th minute when a blast from the top of the scoring area by Amelia McAfee, landed by Jacquelyn Scopa, as she tallied the first goal of the season for Lasell.
In the final frame, Libby Corsetti (Arlington, Mass.) fired a ball to the right of Brooke Gaudet, that Lexi Yost (Swansea, Mass.) was able to tip in for the goal, giving both their first points as members of the RWU squad.
Lasell (0-1, 0-0 GNAC) will take on Framingham State on Wednesday, Sept. 3 at 5:00 pm before traveling for their Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) opener at Saint Joseph's College (Maine).
Roger Williams (1-1, 0-0 CNE) will host Connecticut College on Wednesday, Sept. 3 at 4:00 pm, before playing Plymouth State on their first road contest of the season on Saturday, Sept. 6 at 12:00 pm.
