Field Hockey: Hawks Fall Just Shy in Comeback Bid Against Connecticut College

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Field Hockey team fell to Connecticut College, 3-2, on Wednesday afternoon on Bayside Field.

The Camels earned their first win of the season, as they outshot the Hawks 23-15, with 11 shots going on target to the Hawks' 12. The Camels made 10 total saves on the day with two coming off defensive saves by Lilly Moore, as Isabella Carnall made eight saves in her collegiate debut, for the win. The Camels also had 13 penalty corners in the win, with Roger Williams earning 11.

The Camels had three separate goal scorers in the matchup, while the Hawks saw two different players score, while assisting once. In goal for the Hawks, Hannah Brazil (Sandwich, Mass.) tallied eight saves.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Camels struck first in the second frame, scoring in the 28th minute after a penalty corner made it's way out to Katie Dolan, who sent a cross over to Meredith du Four, putting Connecticut College up 1-0.

After the halftime break, Connecticut College was able to strike again, this time with Sadie Gearan finding Elizabeth Bonner in space, taking a 2-0 lead. The Hawks responded in less than a minute, with Eva Wood (Sandwich, Mass.) finding Chelsea King (Albany, N.Y.), cutting the deficit down to one. With 2:05 remaining in the third quarter, Kellyn Scheel put the Camels up by two again, taking a 3-1 advantage into the final frame.

The Hawks came out firing in the fourth quarter. After controlling the opening 10 minutes of action, RWU struck with Maddy Monahan (Bristol, N.H.) firing a blast from the top of the scoring area, cutting the deficit to one with 5:01 remaining. Despite multiple opportunities, the Hawks were unable to get by a stout defense, including Moore.

Roger Williams (1-2, 0-0 CNE) will travel to Plymouth, N.H. for a Saturday, Sept. 6 matchup at 12:00 pm, the Hawks will then turn their focus to Wednesday, Sept. 10 when they host Simmons, ahead of their Conference of New England (CNE) opener on Saturday, Sept. 13 at 1:00 pm.
