Women’s Volleyball: Hawks Fall in Four Sets to Coast Guard

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Roger Williams University Women's Volleyball team was able to overcome a 2-0 set deficit, winning the third, but was unable to come back and defeat Coast Guard, falling 3-1 (25-21, 25-21, 17-25, 25-23), at Roland Gymnasium.

Roger Williams hit .222 in the match, while the Bears hit .253 in the match. RWU also led in blocks with 13 in the match, to Coast Guard's three, but the Hawks were unable to overcome CGA.

Amelia Matson had 16 kills, with Abigail Schweitzr earning 11 in the match. Matson hit .306 with 12 digs in the double-double, while seeing Ava Ahokovi earn 32 assists, with Laila Baameur earn 27 total digs.

For the Hawks, Kaylee Jackson (Naugatuck, Conn.) and Marianna Hernandez (Norwalk, Conn.) had 16 and 15 digs, respectively, while Jackson hit .368 with seven kills on 19 attempts without an error. Peyton Felix (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) had 13 kills with three total blocks, while Lily Winsten (Rockledge, Fla.) was in on six blocks.

After an error by the Bears put the match within one, Coast Guard recovered by scoring four of the next five points, jumping out to an 18-14 lead after a kill by Samantha Ventimiglia. The Hawks were able to crawl back to within three after a kill by Felix, but Sarah Somer finished the set after with a kill of her own.

After a similar score in the second set, the Hawks battled back in the third, jumping out to a 9-1 lead. The Hawks were able to maintain that lead after seeing Angela West (Riverview, Fla.) finish the third set with a kill.

In the fourth, RWU held a 20-17 lead, with a kill by Dylan Elferdink sparking a three-point run to level the score. With the Hawks leading 22-21, the Bears scored another three straight to take the lead, before seeing Jackson tally a kill for the Hawks, ahead of Matson's kill, ending the match.

Roger Williams (3-7, 0-0 CNE) will host Wellesley on Saturday, Sept. 20 at 1:00 pm ahead of a Wednesday, Sept 24 at 7:00 pm in Milton, Mass.
