BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University men's soccer team overcame a penalty kick goal by Rhode Island College on Tuesday evening in front of the home crowd at Bayside Field, playing to a 1-1 draw with the Anchormen.
The Hawks tallied 14 shots on the day, with eight attempts landing on target. RIC recorded four shots, two of which were on goal. Corner kicks favored RWU, 9-2, while fouls went 10-8 in favor of RIC. Each team was issued one yellow card.
RIC goalkeeper Elhadji Ndoye was outstanding in his season debut, making seven saves while allowing one goal. For the Hawks, Eliot Panaccione (Pepperell, Mass.) was the goalkeeper of record, making one save while allowing a goal on a penalty kick.
In the opening half, a foul by Luke McCarthy (Tolland, Conn.) inside the box gave the Anchormen a penalty opportunity. Julian Orellana converted from the spot, giving RIC a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute.
Roger Williams responded when Liam Blaisdell (Plymouth, Mass.) found an open Max Patenaude (Pepperell, Mass.) inside the box on a pass that Patenaude directed into the back of the net to level the match at 1-1.
The Hawks' best chance in the second half came in the 55th minute when a ball rolled out to Aidan Jennings (San Diego, Calif.) at the top of the box. Jennings fired a shot that narrowly missed over the crossbar. Later, Dylan Robbins (Johnston, R.I.) created space on the right side after juking his defender, but his cross sailed just over his teammate's head on the opposite side of the goal.
In the closing minute, the Hawks had two strong opportunities. Jennings fired a shot past a diving Ndoye, but the RIC goalkeeper made the save, forcing a corner kick. With 24 seconds remaining, Jennings had another chance in a scramble inside the box, but the final shot bounced around before time expired.
Roger Williams (1-0-1, 0-0-0 CNE) will travel to Endicott for its Commonwealth Coast Conference opener Friday, Sept. 5, at 4 p.m. The Hawks will then visit MIT on Tuesday, Sept. 9, and MCLA on Saturday, Sept. 13.
