Women’s Volleyball: Hawks Fall to Tufts in Three Sets

MEDFORD, Mass. – The Roger Williams University women's volleyball team saw its record fall to 0-4 to start the season Tuesday evening, falling to Tufts, 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-19), at Cousens Gym.

The Jumbos hit .269 as a team, picking up 45 kills on 108 attempts with 16 errors. The Hawks tallied a .133 hitting percentage, earning 29 kills in the match with 15 attack errors. Tufts also led in service aces, 5-4; blocks, 7-4; assists, 38-24; and digs, 53-37.

Emma Heckman paced Tufts, tallying 11 kills while hitting .714 on 14 attempts with one error. Bridget Lonergan also hit an efficient .727 in the match with eight kills on 11 attempts. Rianna Liu and Ella Norris each finished with double-digit assists, with Liu recording 17 and Norris adding 14. Dylan Whisenant had nine digs, while Liu and Norris each added eight.

For Roger Williams, Angela West (Riverview, Fla.) posted a .308 hitting percentage with five kills. Izzy Unsworth (Milford, N.H.) hit .304 and recorded a team-high 10 kills, tying Marianna Hernandez (Norwalk, Conn.) for the team lead in digs with nine. Ava McGonagle (Reading, Mass.) added two kills, 15 assists and two block assists.

In the opening set, the Hawks held a 12-9 lead but saw it evaporate as Tufts capitalized on errors, overtaking RWU, 13-12. Tufts allowed the Hawks to tally two late points to pull within three, but a kill by Claire Castor ended the set.

In the second set, the Hawks again led 12-7 before a Tufts scoring run pulled the Jumbos within one. Roger Williams pushed the lead back to three, but a five-point stretch gave Tufts the advantage. RWU battled back to tie the set at 20-20, but Tufts held off the Hawks to take a 2-0 lead.

In the final frame, Tufts jumped out to a 9-1 lead and never looked back, securing the sweep.

Roger Williams (0-4, 0-0 CNE) will host the RWU Invitational beginning Friday, Sept. 5. The Hawks open against Simmons on Friday before facing Wesleyan and Wheaton (Mass.) on Saturday, Sept. 6.
