NEWPORT, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Men's Soccer team battled Salve Regina University to a 1-1 draw in Newport on Sunday afternoon.
The Hawks tallied 20 shots on the day, with ten attempts landing on target. Salve recorded ten shots, five of which were on goal. The Hawks led in corner kicks, 5-3, and fouls, 9-7. The Hawks were issued one yellow card, while the Seahawks team was issued one red card.
Salve Regina keeper Adonis Santiago was strong in net, making nine saves while allowing one goal. For the Hawks, Eliot Panaccione (Pepperell, Mass.) made four saves and allowed one goal.
In the opening half, the Hawks controlled the game, firing off four shots in the first 15 minutes. Aidan Jennings (San Diego, Calif.) found an open sophomore Louis Hawkins (Norwich, Conn.) who found the back of the net, giving Roger Williams a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute.
Salve Regina responded when Sawyer Beyer scored an unassisted goal in the 56th minute to level the match at 1-1.
The Hawks put Salve Regina's goalkeeper to work. Dylan Thomas (Norwalk, Conn.) fired a shot in the 80th minute, but the Seahawk goalkeeper made the save. Tyler Jastrab (Townsend, Mass.) took a header shot in the 82nd and was denied by Santiago. With two minutes left, Noah Massotti (Douglas, Mass.) fired the last shot of the game, also saved by Santiago.
Roger Williams (4-0-3, 1-0-1 CNE) return home and to conference play with University of New England on Saturday, Sept. 27. Salve Regina (1-2-3, 0-1-0 NEWMAC) host Massachusetts Maritime Academy on Tuesday, Sept. 23.
