BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Men's Soccer team shut out University of New England (UNE), 3-0, in a Conference of New England (CNE) matchup on Bayside Field Saturday.
The Hawks were dialed in the entire match, outshooting UNE 25-5, with 11-1 being on goal. Roger Williams maintained steady offensive pressure throughout the physical matchup that saw the Hawks rack up eight fouls to the Nor'easter's six, with one yellow card being issued to the Hawks. Roger Williams had an abundance of chances, tallying 12 total corner kicks to UNE's two.
In the first half, Roger Williams controlled the pace, firing off 10 shots with four on goal. UNE had two shots in the first, with none on target. Despite having seven corner kicks before halftime, the Hawks were unable convert.
The second half began with an early penalty goal by Tyler Jastrab (Townsend, Mass.) in the 47th minute, putting RWU up 1–0. The Hawks continued to apply pressure, with Louis Hawkins (Norwich, Conn.) scoring in the 70th minute off of a corner from Will Schiffer (Cotuit, Mass.). Patrick Marino (Wyckoff, N.J.) finished off the scoring for the Hawks with a goal in the 74th minute. UNE struggled to generate meaningful chances and made several substitutions to shake things up, but they saw three shots in the half with only one on goal.
UNE goalkeeper Sean MacDonald tallied eight saves under constant pressure, while RWU keeper Eliot Panaccione (Pepperell, Mass.) tallied one save to secure the shut out.
Roger Williams (6-0-3, 2-0-1 CNE) is on the road for the next few, heading to WPI on Tuesday, Sept. 30 and then Western New England on Saturday, Oct. 4.
University of New England (0-5-3, 0-2-1 CNE) head into a few non-conference games, hosting Plymouth State on Tuesday, Sept. 30 before traveling to Thomas on Saturday, Oct. 4.
