Field Hockey: Hawks Earn Victory in Opening Game of Weekend at Hartford

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The Roger Williams University Field Hockey team played the first of their two games of the weekend on Saturday afternoon, downing Hartford, 5-0, in a Conference of New England (CNE) contest.

The RWU tallied 32 shots, with Hartford unable to collect one, while Roger Williams also earned 11 penalty corners while keeping Hartford away from a corner chance.

The Hawks of RWU saw three goalkeepers enter the game, with Hannah Brazil (Sandwich, Mass.) earning the start in the win. Carolyn Somers and Aubrey Paul split time, combining for 22 total saves, while Molly O'Donnell earned a defensive save.

Offensively, Roger Williams saw five different goal scorers in the contest, with Chelsea King (Albany, N.Y.) earning a pair of assists, while Anna Kruggel (Scituate, Mass.) also picked up a helper.

The Hawks struck 3:20 into the contest, when King sent a penalty corner out to Elizabeth Duquette (Pittsford, N.Y.) who then buried a shot behind the Hartford goalkeeper. Just over 10 minutes later, Lexi Yost (Swansea, Mass.) was able to clean up a shot initially off the stick of King that was saved by Somers. Yost then was able to gather and fire the shot into the back of the cage, putting RWU up 2-0 after the first frame.

In the second quarter of action, King tallied her lone goal for the game after putting the ball in on a penalty corner. Kruggel controlled the ball before sending a pass in to King, who buried the shot to give RWU a 3-0 advantage, heading into the break.

In the third quarter of action, the Hawks added a goal with 4:54 remaining, when Katie Flanagan (Madison, Conn.) put a shot into the cage. RWU also added a goal with Emma Sheldon (Suffield, Conn.) tallying her second goal of the season.

Hartford (2-5, 0-3 CNE) will travel to face Springfield on Wednesday, Oct. 1 at 5:00 pm ahead of a Saturday, Oct. 4, matchup at Al-Marzook Field at Alumni Stadium against Gordon College.
