POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Roger Williams University Field Hockey team defeated Vassar 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at Weinberg Field in a non-conference contest to close out the weekend.
The Brewers dictated the pace, controlling possession, firing 19 shots to the Hawks' six while putting 10 of their shots on target as RWU shot four on frame. Vassar also led in penalty corner opportunities, tallying 13 to the Hawks' three.
Sophia Jammar had four shots for Vassar, with three landing on target, while Mackenzie Allen and Julia Morris each had a pair of shots on target. Grace Wiley had three saves in the contest, allowing one goal.
Hannah Brazil (Sandwich, Mass.) tallied 10 saves in the matchup, backstopping the Hawks to the win. Chelsea King (Albany, N.Y.) and Maddy Monahan (Bristol, N.H.) each had a pair of shots on target, with King taking three total attempts. Grace Rocheleau (West Hartford, Conn.) had the other shot in the match for RWU.
After a scoreless first 43 minutes of play, the Hawks struck in the 44th, with Monahan sending a pass into the scoring area that King collected. King, with her back to the net, rolled left and cut back to the right before firing a shot that deflected off a defender's stick and into the back of the net.
Vassar (5-4, 0-0 Liberty League) will open conference play on Friday, Oct. 3 at 4:00 pm when they host Ithaca. The Brewers will then travel to face Union on Sunday, Oct. 5.
Roger Williams (7-3, 3-0 CNE) will travel to take on #6 Babson on Wednesday, Oct. 1 at 6:00 pm ahead of a Saturday, Oct. 4, home match against Johnson & Wales at 12:00 pm in Conference of New England (CNE) play.
