Men’s Soccer: Hawks Draw WPI, 1-1, in Non-Conference Play

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Roger Williams University Men's Soccer team drew a heated contest against WPI, 1-1, in a non-conference game on Tuesday in Worcester.

The Hawks outshot the Engineers 15-12, with 5-6 being on the net. Roger Williams held the advantage on total corner kicks with nine, while WPI had two on the day. The game was a battle, as the Hawks tallied 14 fouls and the Engineers tallied 13.

The game started slow but physical, with six total fouls by both teams in the first 25 minutes. The Hawks struck first with a goal by Tyler Jastrab (Townsend, Mass.) in the 29th minute of action, his third goal of the season. The lead wouldn't last long, as WPI clawed their way back in the 38th minute with a goal of their own by Mike Montabana.

The Hawks and Engineers combined for 13 shots attempted by halftime. Roger Williams was outshot 5-8, with 3-4 being on target. Despite this strong first half for both teams, they'd remain even at 1-1.

The second half kept the same pace, the Hawks were called on four quick fouls in the first 20 minutes after halftime. The defense would remain strong in the second half as neither team were able to find the back of the net again as the score would remain 1-1.

Eliot Panaccione (Pepperell, MA) collected five saves in goal for RWU, while WPI's keeper Brendan Ross tallied four saves.

Roger Williams (6-0-4, 2-0-1 CNE) will travel to Western New England on Saturday, Oct. 4 at 2:30 PM before hosting Clark on Monday, Oct. 6 at 4:00 PM. WPI (3-2-4, 0-0-1 NEWMAC) will travel to Coast Guard on Saturday, Oct. 4 at 2:00 PM before facing off against Clark on Saturday, Oct. 11.
