BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Roger Williams University Women's Tennis team defeated Bridgewater State Thursday afternoon at the Rosen Memorial Tennis Courts on the campus of Bridgewater State, 7-0, in non-conference action.
The Hawks swept doubles play, earning a 6-1 win at the No. 1 doubles spot from Valentina Abarca (Riobamba, Ecuador), and Megan Bache (Westbrook, Conn.), ahead of a doubles point-sealing win by Izzy Pecora (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) and Ella Mancini (Middlebury, Conn.) with a 6-0 sweep at the No. 2 doubles spot. RWU secured the sweep with Adriana Palmieri (Southington, Conn.) and Claire Dwyer (Manchester, Maine) earning a 6-1 win at No. 3 doubles.
In singles play, leading 1-0, the Hawks earned an opening win as Palmieri swept Samantha Bettencourt, 6-0, 6-0, earning the No. 5 singles win. The Hawks then saw Pecora overcome her challenger at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-1, to take a 3-0 lead in the match. The match was secured with Gabrielle Petroniro (Wolcott, Conn.) earning a 6-2, 6-3 win over Ava Alves at the No. 6 singles spot.
Bache secured a singles win at No. 4 with a 6-2, 6-2 victory, ahead of Mancini and Abarca winning their respective matches at No. 3 and No. 1 singles.
