BOSTON, Mass. – The Roger Williams University Women's Basketball team saw Suffolk come within two points in the fourth quarter, but were able to expand their lead over the final 4:42, as the Hawks took a 62-52 win in Conference of New England (CNE) action at Smith Court.
The Hawks shot 35.8 percent from the field, including 27.3 percent from three point range, while holding the Rams without a three point make in the contest. Suffolk out rebounded the Hawks 43-32, while earning 10 steals to the Rams seven.
Roger Williams' offense was run through
Sophia Coppola (Madison, Conn.) who tallied 23 points, while knocking down 7-of-16 shots from the floor, with three shots coming from beyond the arc. Coppola led with a game-high four blocks and was tied for the team lead in steals with three with
Chelsea Graiver (North Yarmouth, Maine).
Chloe Richardson (Norwell, Mass.) scored nine points off three-pointer, while knocking down another three shots from the free throw line, with
Lilli Clark (Willimantic, Conn.) also scoring in double figures with 10 points. Graiver and
Meg Qualey (Woburn, Mass.) tied for the team lead with four rebounds.
For Suffolk, Allison Bono tallied a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Tatiana Tune had 12 points with five rebounds, and Jordan Moreau had 10 points, with five rebounds.
Roger Williams went into the halftime break with an 34-24 lead going into the halftime break, but the Hawks shot 37.5 percent in the second half, while expanding their lead to 11 after a three by Richardson gave the Hawks their largest lead of the game, that they would hold to the 4:08 mark when a pair of free throws allowed the Rams to cut the lead to nine.
Trailing by five heading into the fourth quarter, the Rams were able to cut the lead down to two with 4:42 remaining, but the Hawks responded with a bucket by Coppola and a jumper by Graiver to expand their lead back to six, securing the win.
Roger Williams (9-6, 6-1 CNE) will host Emmanuel on Saturday, Jan. 17 at 1:00 pm in the Campus Rec Center. The Hawks will then travel to battle Hartford on Tuesday, Jan. 20 at 5:30 pm.
