BRISTOL, R.I. — Tucker Taylor (Gonzalez, Texas) won a deciding match tiebreaker at No. 4 singles to lift the Roger Williams University Men's Tennis team to a 4-3 victory over Salve Regina on Thursday at the RWU Tennis Courts.
Roger Williams (1-1, 0-0 CNE) captured the doubles point before earning three singles victories. Taylor delivered the clinching win, while Om Seth (Lincoln, R.I.) and Will Hurlbut (Marion, Mass.) each posted victories in singles and doubles.
Salve Regina (2-2, 0-1 NEWMAC) received singles victories from Jude Neven, Luca Testa and Jesper Jensen. Neven and Testa also combined for the Seahawks' lone doubles win.
After Salve Regina took No. 2 doubles, Bronson DeSisto (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Hurlbut defeated Kole Pinto and Jensen, 7-6 (7-2), at No. 1. Seth and Joshua Mizrahi (Albertson, N.Y.) then secured the doubles point with a 7-5 victory over Max Varian and Colin Fleet at No. 3.
The Seahawks responded by winning the first three completed singles matches to build a 3-1 lead. Testa earned a victory by retirement at No. 2, Neven defeated DeSisto, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 1, and Jensen topped Mizrahi, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 3.
Seth began the Hawks' comeback with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Varian at No. 5. Hurlbut followed with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Fleet at No. 6, evening the match at 3-3.
With the result resting on No. 4 singles, Taylor outlasted Pinto, 7-5, 4-6, 10-8, to secure Roger Williams' first victory of the season.
Roger Williams returns to action Friday, Oct. 9, at the Newport Grass Court Tournament at 1 p.m.
