BEVERLY, Mass. — The Conference of New England announced Monday afternoon that Roger Williams University field hockey first-year midfielder Mikayla Hanel (Ridgefield, Conn.) has been named the CNE Rookie of the Week for her outstanding performance during the week of October 12-18!
Hanel earns her second CNE weekly award of the season, adding to the Rookie of the Week honor she received on October 5. The first-year standout made her presence felt throughout a pivotal week for the Hawks, helping RWU secure two key victories, including a statement win over conference rival Endicott on Senior Day!
Hanel Comes Up Clutch Against the Gulls
Hanel helped set the tone for the week with a shot on goal in RWU's 2-1 victory over Salve Regina on October 14 at Bayside Field. She followed that performance with a clutch showing against Endicott, finding the back of the cage to give the Hawks an early 1-0 lead in a hard-fought conference showdown.
With the game ultimately heading to double overtime, the Hawks kept battling until Eva Wood (Sandwich, Mass.) delivered the game-winning goal off a pass from sophomore Brodie Loveland (West Milford, N.J.), sealing an electrifying 2-1 double-overtime victory over the Gulls.
The Senior Day triumph marked a huge result for RWU, pushing the Hawks to 3-1 in CNE play and highlighting Hanel's impact during a crucial stretch of the season.
WHAT'S NEXT?
Hanel and the Hawks look to carry that momentum into their next matchup as they travel to Keene, N.H., to face Keene State in a non-conference battle scheduled for 5 p.m.
