Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Curry, Splits Saturday Tri-Match

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Volleyball team split a pair of matches during Saturday's tri-match at the Paolino Recreation Center. The Hawks swept Conference of New England opponent Curry College 3-0 (25-17, 26-24, 25-16) before falling to Regis College 3-1 (25-17, 15-25, 25-20, 25-18). Roger Williams finished the day at 6-11 overall and 2-2 in conference play.

For the Hawks, Angela West (Riverview, Fla.) totaled a team-high 25 kills while hitting .345 across the two matches. Peyton Felix (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) added 24 kills and 20 digs, while Adele Kasper (Parsippany, N.J.) recorded 12 kills with just one error for a .579 hitting percentage and added eight total blocks. Ava Lombardo (Newtown, Conn.) distributed 52 assists and collected 15 digs, and Marianna Hernandez (Norwalk, Conn.) anchored the back row with 35 digs.

For Curry, Isabella Drake and Emma Hobart led the Colonels with five kills apiece. Drake added 13 digs and three service aces. Regis was led by Grace Fabiano with 12 kills, while Avery Mola contributed 10 kills and nine digs. Eva Catalanotto finished with nine kills on a .571 hitting percentage, Gwen Arnold recorded 23 digs and Alexandra Rivera delivered 20 assists and three aces.

Across the two matches, Roger Williams totaled 79 kills, 123 digs, 16 service aces and 13 team blocks.

Roger Williams 3, Curry 0

Roger Williams used a four-point serving run from Hernandez to build a 13-4 advantage in the opening set. Curry pulled within four at 20-16, but the Hawks scored five of the final six points to secure a 25-17 victory.

The Hawks led 22-16 in the second set before the Colonels rallied to even the score at 24. Claire Davis (Trumbull, Conn.) answered with a kill before Kasper closed the frame with another, giving RWU a 26-24 win.

Roger Williams broke open the third set with 11 consecutive points, turning a 4-4 tie into a 15-4 advantage. Sarah Wilcox (Bristol, R.I.) delivered four aces during the run as the Hawks completed the sweep with a 25-16 victory. RWU hit .242 in the match and limited Curry to a .012 hitting percentage while holding a 12-9 advantage in service aces.

Felix paced the Hawks with 14 kills, while West added nine. Kasper registered seven kills without an error on nine attacks, and Lombardo finished with 29 assists.

Regis 3, Roger Williams 1

Regis opened an early 15-5 advantage in the first set and held off an RWU rally to earn a 25-17 victory.

The Hawks responded in the second frame. Leading 17-15, RWU scored the final eight points behind the serve of Samantha Devino (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.), who delivered three aces during the closing run. Felix added three kills as Roger Williams evened the match with a 25-15 win.

RWU built a 5-1 advantage in the third set, but Regis rallied and broke a 15-15 tie with four consecutive points on its way to a 25-20 victory. The Hawks led 14-10 in the fourth before the Pride responded with a 5-0 run. With the score later tied at 16, Regis scored five straight points and closed out the match, 25-18.

West led Roger Williams with 16 kills on a .400 hitting percentage. Felix recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 16 digs, while Kasper contributed five kills and five block assists. Hernandez collected 20 digs, and Lombardo finished with 23 assists and nine digs.

Roger Williams returns to action Saturday, Oct. 10, when it hosts Hartford at 1 p.m. at the Paolino Recreation Center.
