Men’s Basketball: Western New England Pulls Away from Hawks, 89–63

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — The Roger Williams University Men's Basketball team fell on the road Wednesday evening, dropping an 89–63 decision to Western New England at the Anthony S. Caprio Alumni Healthful Living Center.

Western New England seized control early, shooting 60 percent from the field in the opening half and building a 38–22 lead at the break. The Golden Bears continued their efficient play after halftime, finishing the night at 54.7 percent shooting overall while holding the Hawks to 36.1 percent from the floor. WNE led for over 38 minutes and pushed its advantage to as many as 37 points in the second half.

Ashton Leclerc (Gorham, Maine) and Ty Higgins (New Marlborough, Mass.) paced Roger Williams with 12 points apiece, with Leclerc knocking down four three-pointers. Asher Hercek (North Fort Myers, Fla.) added 10 points off the bench on 3-of-4 shooting, including two makes from beyond the arc. Owen Boudria (Westport, Mass.) contributed seven points and four rebounds, while Philip Sughrue (Winchester, Mass.) pulled down five boards and recorded a block.

Western New England was led by Avery Mickens with 17 points, while Eddie McCoy scored 13 on a perfect 5-of-5 shooting night. The Golden Bears also received 12 points from Jason Britschge and strong interior production from Luka Vlajkovic, who added nine points and nine rebounds.

Roger Williams finished 11-of-33 from three-point range and 8-of-11 from the free-throw line but struggled to generate consistent offense in the first half, shooting just 25 percent before finding a better rhythm after intermission.

The Hawks will look to regroup as conference play continues later this week at home on Saturday, Feb. 14 vs Gordon.
