Men’s Basketball: RWU Falls to Gordon in Final Seconds on Senior Day

BRISTOL, R.I.– The Roger Williams University Men's Basketball team suffered a narrow Conference of New England (CNE) setback on Saturday afternoon, falling 77–76 to Gordon College on Senior Day inside the Campus Recreation Center.

Roger Williams controlled much of the contest, leading for more than 26 minutes of game time and building a nine-point second-half advantage at 53–44 with 13:29 remaining. The Hawks shot an efficient 43.9 percent from the field and forced 11 Gordon turnovers, converting them into 16 points while committing just seven turnovers of their own.

The game featured multiple ties and lead changes. RWU held their final lead at 76–75 with 55 seconds left in the game. Gordon converted two free throws in the closing moments to secure the one-point decision.

Finn Miller (Stamford, Conn.) led the Hawks with 26 points on 8-of-13 shooting, adding eight rebounds and shooting 75 percent from the free-throw line. Ryan Hammarlund  (Southington, Conn.) delivered a strong all-around performance with 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting, including 2-of-4 from three-point range, while contributing four rebounds and four steals. Owen Boudria (Westport, Mass.) added 12 points and five rebounds, going 6-of-8 at the free-throw line.

Roger Williams received a major lift from its bench, which outscored Gordon's reserves 24–6. The Hawks also held advantages in fast-break points (23–9), steals (9–3), and points in the paint (36–32). RWU shot 76.9 percent from the free-throw line and finished 6-of-28 from beyond the arc.

Gordon was paced by Alex Daniel's 26 points, including six three-pointers, while Ryan Brooks added 20 points and nine rebounds. Isaac Jarvis secured a double-double, finishing with 18 points and 11 rebounds. The Fighting Scots shot 39.3 percent from the floor and 79.3 percent at the line, capitalizing on 15 offensive rebounds that led to a 15–5 edge in second-chance points. Gordon also finished with a 44–33 advantage on the glass.

Despite leading for the majority of the game and holding Gordon to 27.3 percent shooting from three-point range, the Hawks were unable to close out the final possession in a tightly contested battle.

Before the game, Roger Williams honored their three seniors Ty Higgins (New Marlborough, Mass.), Philip Sughrue (Winchester, Mass.), and Kyle Monahan (Maynard, Mass.), as well as their team manager of two years, senior Max Manjos.

Roger Williams (11-12, 7-7 CNE) will look to bounce back as it continues conference play against JWU on Tuesday, Feb. 17 before ending the regular season at Endicott on Saturday, Feb. 21. Gordon (7-16, 6-8 CNE) will travel to Curry on Tuesday, Feb. 17 ahead of ending their regular season at home against Suffolk on Saturday, Feb. 21.
