BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Men's Lacrosse team fell to Wheaton on Saturday afternoon on Bayside Field, dropping to the Lyons 10-6, in a non-conference matchup.
The Hawks' were outshot 36-22 while the Lyons put 18 shots on target, to Roger Williams' 17. The Hawks were able to complete 18-of-20 clear attempts while each team picked up 32 ground balls on the day.
Evan Borchert made 12 saves, while allowing six goals, with Aaron D'Aversa (Sea Cliff, N.Y.) making six saves with 10 goals allowed. For Wheaton, Theo Stamatel had four points, tallying three assists with two ground balls, and Emmett Edwards also tallied four points, scoring three goals on the day, with two ground balls. Defensively, Henry Stamatel had three caused turnovers with his three ground balls with Ryan Snodgrass earning a pair of caused turnovers.
The Hawks saw Matt Kennedy (Cumberland, Maine) with three points, a goal, and two assists, with Brady Lee (Mattapoisett, Mass.) and Nick Cotting (Holliston, Mass.) each earning two points, with Cotting scoring a pair of goals, and Lee splitting his points between a goal and an assist. Kyle Zirn (Chester, N.H.) had five caused turnovers with five ground balls.
The Hawks were the first to strike as Lee tallied a goal just 52 seconds into the game, but the Lyons were able to respond, scoring four straight goals to end the quarter, leading 4-1. Zac Dilauri scored his third goal of the season for the Lyons, before Cotting tallied his first, sparking a three-goal run followed by Kennedy and Carter Shelton (Castle Rock, Colo.), cutting the lead down to one with 7:58 remaining in the third quarter.
With 7:19 remaining in the third quarter, Edwards scored the first of three straight goals for the Lyons, expanding the lead to 8-4, before Charlie Goodrich put the Lyons up by five. The Hawks tallied two goals, but Goodrich scored his ninth of the season to put the game out of reach.
Roger Williams (0-2, 0-0 CNE) will hit the road to face Emerson on Friday, Feb. 27 at 6:00 pm. The Hawks will then travel to face Maine Maritime on Saturday, Mar. 7 at 1:00 pm in Castine.
