BOSTON, Mass. – The Roger Williams University Men's Lacrosse team was able to sike twice late in the contest, but could not come up with the equalizer in the fourth quarter, as they fell to Emerson, 8-7, at Lester Rotch Field, Friday evening.
The Hawks out shot the Lions, 33-18, placing 22 shots on target to the Lions' 13. The Hawks had 20 turnovers, while taking away 25 going 12-for-13 on clear attempts, with 49 ground balls to the Lions 34. Roger Williams also took the faceoff battle, 13-6.
Reece Moore (Marblehead, Mass.) led the offense, with the first-year tallying three points off six shots, placing four on target, with three ground balls. Caleb McKeown (Plymouth, Mass.) had one goal and with a ground ball, while Alex Burrill (Scituate, Mass.) had a goal with two ground balls and a caused turnover. Defensively, Kyle Zirn (Chester, N.H.) paced Roger Williams with eight ground balls and five caused turnovers, while Drew LaChapelle (Andover, Mass.) had five ground balls with a goal in the game. David Rizzo (Methuen, Mass.) went 11-for-17 in faceoffs, while Leo Anthony (Scituate, Mass.) added a pair of wins in two attempts.
Zachary Stern-Hayes had three points for Emerson with a goal and a pair of assists, with Brady Fish and JD Frey also collecting two points each. Fish had a goal and an assist, with Frey scoring two tallies for the Lions. John Marcone had eight ground balls for Emerson, with two caused turnovers, while Ethan Corby had seven ground balls on the night. Corby also collected the win making 15 saves in the matchup.
Emerson struck first, 1:07 into the opening quarter, after clearing the ball, Fish fired a shot into the back of the net. The Hawks leveled the game shortly after, with McKeown tallying his lone goal of the night. Roger Williams then took the lead with 6:20 remaining in the opening quarter, with Moore sticking for this first, but Stern-Hayes scored the first of two goals in 1:07 to retake the lead, ahead of the end of the first quarter.
LaChappelle struck first in the second, followed by Nick Cotting (Holliston, Mass.) finding Moore for his second goal of the game to take a 4-3 advantage. With 7:59 remaining in the opening half, Aidan Koster (Reading, Mass.) scored to put the Hawks up by two for the first time in the contest. Emerson responded, taking advantage of a man-up opportunity to pull within one, and Toby Cunningham scored with 2:34 remaining in the half to head into the break knotted up at 5-5.
Emerson was able to use the opening stanza of the second half to expand their lead to 8-5, taking advantage of two man-up opportunities, but Burrill tallied a goal with 28 seconds remaining in the third quarter to take cut the deficit to two heading into the fourth frame. Moore tallied his third of the night with 4:34 remaining, but the Lions' defense was stout and able to hold the Hawks at bay to take the contest.
Roger Williams (0-3, 0-0 CNE) will return to action on Saturday, Mar. 7 at 1:00 pm in Castine, Maine. The Hawks will then host Kean on Wednesday, Mar. 11 at 12:00 om before rounding out Spring Break at Eastern Connecticut State on Saturday, Mar. 14.
