Men's Tennis: Hawks Comeplete Comeback Bid in Singles Play

ORLANDO, Fla. — The Roger Williams University men's tennis team edged the University of Wisconsin–Superior, 4–3, Tuesday morning at Sylvan Lake Park, securing the match with a strong showing in singles play after a tightly contested doubles session.

UW–Superior opened the match by claiming the doubles point, taking two of the three matches. The Yellowjackets first secured the point at No. 2 doubles, where Vitor Sakakibara and Yash Chhabra defeated Camden Poitras (Londonderry, N.H.) and Will Hurlbut (Marion, Mass.), 6–4. UW–Superior followed with a win at No. 1 doubles as Sharan Kanugovi and Igor Guetten Chaves topped Bronson DeSisto (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Ryan Carroll(Holden, Mass.), 6–3. Roger Williams picked up its lone doubles victory in the final match to finish, with Iker Rodriguez-Alcocer (Nuacalpan de Juarez, Mexico) and Steven Mathew (Baypoint, N.Y.) outlasting Adam Culp and Mateo Abarca Pino in a tiebreak, 7–6 (7–2).

Roger Williams responded in singles, winning four of the six matches to secure the comeback victory. DeSisto delivered the first point for the Hawks at No. 1 singles, rallying past Igor Guetten Chaves in a match tiebreak, 6–2, 3–6, 10–8. UW–Superior answered at No. 3 singles, where Chhabra edged Rodriguez-Alcocer, 7–6, 6–4, and at No. 4 singles as Abarca Pino defeated Poitras, 6–3, 6–1.

Carroll put the Hawks back in front with a three-set victory at No. 2 singles, 6–3, 5–7, 10–8, before Hurlbut added another point at No. 6 singles with a straight-set win, 6–2, 6–2. The decisive point came at No. 5 singles, where Om Seth (Lincoln, R.I.) battled past Sakakibara in a match tiebreak, 7–6, 2–6, 10–5, clinching the 4–3 win for Roger Williams.

Roger Williams (6-3, 1-0 CNE) will close out their Spring Break trip on Wednesday, Mar. 11 at 12:00 pm against Piedmont at the USTA National Campus.
