ORLANDO, Fla. — The Roger Williams University women's tennis team dropped a 5–2 decision to the University of Wisconsin–Superior Tuesday morning at Sylvan Lake Park, despite earning the doubles point and picking up two singles victories in the matchup.
UW-Superior opened the contest by claiming the doubles point, taking two of the three matches. UW–Superior struck first at No. 3 doubles as Elif Oezen and Daylyn Drew defeated Megan Bache (Westbrook, Conn.) and Ashlyn Keating (Ludlow, Mass.), 6–2. The Hawks answered at No. 2 doubles, where Anouk Bluemm and Kate Jonas defeated Izzy Pecora (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) and Annette Carter (Bedford, N.H.), 6–2. The Hawks secured a victory at No. 1 doubles to finish double play, with Valentina Abarca (Riobamba, Ecuador) and Claire Dwyer (Manchester, Maine) topping Andreina Tejada and Claudia Curtis, 6–3.
In singles play, UW–Superior pulled ahead by winning four of the six matches. The Yellowjackets earned their first singles point at No. 3, where Elif Oezen defeated Ella Mancini (Middlebury, Conn.), 6–2, 6–1. UW–Superior added another at No. 2 singles with Bluemm posting a 6–3, 6–0 win over Pecora.
Roger Williams responded with victories at No. 4 and No. 6 singles. Bache rallied past Curtis in a three-set match tiebreak, 6–4, 2–6, 10–8, while Gabrielle Petroniro (Wolcott, Conn.) earned a straight-set win over Drew, 7–6, 6–3.
UW–Superior secured the match with wins at the remaining positions. Tejada edged Abarca at No. 1 singles in a match tiebreak, 3–6, 6–4, 10–7, while Jonas outlasted Adriana Palmieri (Southington, Conn.) at No. 5 singles, 6–2, 6–7, 11–9, to seal the 5–2 result.
Roger Williams (14-5, 8-2 CNE) will close out their season on Wednesday, Mar. 11 at 12:00 pm when they take on Emerson at the USTA National Campus.
