Baseball: Albion Uses Three Run Eighth to Get by Roger Williams University

AUBURNDALE, Fla. — The Roger Williams University baseball team rallied from an early deficit and briefly tied the game late, but Albion College used a three-run eighth inning to secure a 13–10 victory Tuesday afternoon at Lake Myrtle Field 6.

Albion struck first in the opening inning on an RBI single from Grahm DeSantis, but Roger Williams answered in the second as Nick Dimaso (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) lifted a sacrifice fly to center to score Will Florio (San Jose, Calif.) and even the score at 1–1.

The Hawks broke the game open in the fifth inning with a five-run rally. Casey DeLorenzo (East Greenwich, R.I.) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in a run before a throwing error allowed another to score. Florio followed with an RBI single and Sam Arcieri (Westwood, N.J.) added a run-scoring double to cap the inning and give Roger Williams a 6–2 lead.

Albion responded in the middle innings, scoring once in the fifth before erupting for four runs in the sixth to take a 7–6 advantage. The Britons added three more runs in the seventh to extend the lead to 10–6.

Roger Williams mounted another comeback in the eighth inning, scoring four runs to tie the game. Jack Tubman (Bellingham, Mass.) started the rally with an RBI double, Florio followed with a run-scoring double of his own, and Arcieri drove in a run with a triple before Griffin Ruffner (Exeter, N.H.) plated the tying run with an RBI single to make it 10–10.

Albion answered immediately in the bottom half of the inning. Carter Stahl delivered the decisive blow with a two-run single as part of a three-run frame that pushed the Britons back in front for good at 13–10.

Florio led Roger Williams at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBIs, while Arcieri added two hits and two RBIs. Ruffner also finished with two hits and an RBI as the Hawks recorded 13 hits in the contest.

Roger Williams (2-3, 0-0 cNE) will take on Stockton on Wednesday, Mar. 11 at 9:15 am. The Hawks will then face off against Fitchburg State on Friday, Mar. 13, for a doubleheader.
