CLERMONT, Fla. – The Roger Williams University Softball team dropped a tightly contested game to Mount St. Joseph, 3-2, on Wednesday afternoon at Hancock Field during spring break action.
The game remained scoreless through the first four innings before the Hawks broke through in the fifth. Kayleigh O'Connor (Southington, Conn.) and Keira Quadros (East Providence, R.I.) knocked a pair of singles up the middle. O'Connor came around to score when Madison Tucholski (Massapequa, N.Y.) singled to right field, giving Roger Williams a 1-0 advantage.
Mount St. Joseph answered in the sixth inning as Mackinley Lawson connected on a solo home run to right-center field, tying the game at 1–1.
Roger Williams regained the lead in the top of the seventh when Hailey Williams (Vernon, Conn.) doubled to left field, driving in Tucholski to make it 2-1.
The Lions responded in the bottom half of the inning. Sydney Hughbanks delivered an RBI single to center field to tie the game, and moments later Calli Fletcher reached on a fielding error that allowed Alix Streeval to score the winning run for Mount St. Joseph.
Roger Williams finished with seven hits in the game. Tucholski led the Hawks with two hits and an RBI, while Williams added an RBI double. Lucy Maurao (Holliston, Mass.), Shannon Starratt (Lake George, N.Y.), O'Connor, and Quadros each recorded a hit.
Quadros started in the circle for the Hawks, allowing one run on seven hits with four strikeouts over five innings. Natalie Lundari (Flemington, N.J.) took the loss in relief, surrendering two runs, both unearned, over 1.2 innings.
Lesleigh Reimers earned the win for Mount St. Joseph with two innings of relief work, while Clare Lopeman allowed one run over the first five innings.
Roger Williams moves to 3-4 on the season, while Mount St. Joseph improves to 6-3. RWU will look to bounce back on Thursday, Mar. 12 with Hiram at 10:00am and North Central at 12:15pm.
