CLERMONT, Fla. — A four-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted Roger Williams University to a 7–6 comeback victory over Hiram College on Wednesday morning in non-conference softball action.
Trailing by three entering the final frame, Roger Williams erupted for five hits to complete the comeback and secure the walk-off win.
Lucy Maurao (Holliston, Mass.) sparked the rally with a single before Shannon Starratt (Lake George, N.Y.) blasted a two-run home run to center field, cutting the deficit to one. Adrianna Amaral (Taunton, Mass.) followed with a single and was pinch-run for by Alexia Tsonis (New Bedford, Mass.) who later came around to score on Kayleigh O'Connor's (Southington, Conn.) sacrifice fly to tie the game. With the bases loaded after Keira Quadros hit a single to center field, Nicolette Fraser put the ball in play, driving in McKenzie Foley from third to seal the win.
Foley led the Hawks offensively, going a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI. Maurao finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a home run, while Starratt drove in two runs with her seventh-inning blast. Fraser added two RBIs, including the game-winning fielder's choice.
Hiram jumped out to an early 2–0 lead in the first inning on an RBI triple from Megan Moser and a bunt single by Lola Thomas. The Terriers extended the advantage to 5–1 through four innings and pushed it to 6–3 in the seventh on Kayla Prigge's RBI single.
Roger Williams chipped away late, beginning with Maurao's solo home run in the fifth and Fraser's RBI single in the sixth to set the stage for the dramatic final inning.
Sophia Bruno (Sandwich, Mass.) earned the win in relief for the Hawks, tossing a scoreless seventh inning. Natalie Lundari (Flemington, N.J.) worked three innings in relief before Bruno entered, while Luci Walters (DeLand, Fla.) made the start.
Avery Contini took the loss for Hiram despite striking out two over 6.1 innings of work.
Roger Williams (4-4, 0-0 CNE) will take on North Central in their final game of their Florida slate this afternoon.
