Men's Lacrosse: Hawks Drop Non-Conference Matchup to ECSU

MANSFIELD, Conn. — A late push by Roger Williams fell just short Saturday afternoon as Eastern Connecticut State held off the Hawks, 6–5, in non-conference men's lacrosse action.

Roger Williams erased an early deficit and tied the game at halftime, but a three-goal burst by Eastern Connecticut State in the third quarter proved decisive.

Eastern Connecticut State struck first with two goals in the opening quarter, including the game's first tally from Ronan Donnelly at 11:49. The Warriors added another late in the period to take a 2–0 lead after one.

The Hawks responded in the second quarter as Reece Moore (Marblehead, Mass.) got Roger Williams on the board off a feed from Caleb McKeown (Plymouth, Mass.). After ECSU regained a two-goal edge, Matt Kennedy (Cumberland, Maine) sparked a rally with back-to-back goals, the second coming with 52 seconds left in the half off an assist from Brady Lee (Mattapoisett, Mass.) to even the score at 3–3.

ECSU seized control early in the third quarter as Landon Mabb scored three straight goals to give the Warriors a 6–3 advantage heading into the final frame.

Roger Williams mounted a comeback in the fourth. Kennedy completed a hat trick with his third goal of the game at 12:03, and Aidan Koster (Reading, Mass.) added a man-up goal with 3:57 remaining, again assisted by Lee, to bring the Hawks within one. However, the Hawks could not find the equalizer in the closing minutes.

Kennedy led Roger Williams with three goals, while Moore and Koster each added one. Lee finished with two assists for the Hawks. In his first start of his collegiate career as goalkeeper, Logan Dudley (Jericho, VT) recorded 14 saves in 58 minutes of action.

For ECSU, Mabb scored three times and Donnelly added two goals and an assist to pace the offense. Goalkeeper Gregory Hilinski made nine saves in the win.

Eastern Connecticut outshot Roger Williams 31–24 and held a slight edge in ground balls, 28–26, in the contest.

Roger Williams (1-5, 0-0 CNE) will travel to Buzzards Bay, MA to face the Massachusetts Maritime Buccaneers on March 17th.
