Women’s Lacrosse: Vassar Tops RWU, 15-8

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Lacrosse team dropped a 15-8 decision to Vassar on Saturday afternoon at Bayside Field in non-conference action.

Roger Williams struck first when Jamie Anthony (Somers, Conn.) scored unassisted at the 10:52 mark of the opening quarter to give the Hawks an early 1-0 lead. The Brewers responded with the next three goals of the period, getting scores from Sigrid Fredlund, Siena Wong, and Emilia Diliberto to take a 3-1 advantage.

Vassar added two more goals early in the second quarter before Roger Williams answered on the player-up opportunity, as Allie Shamberger (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) finished off a feed from Molly Schmitz (Hamden, Conn.) with 4:15 remaining in the half to make it 5-2. The Brewers closed the first half with back-to-back goals from Tess Billings to carry a 7-2 lead into the break.

Billings opened the scoring in the third quarter before Amelia Poirier and Maddie Kaltsas each added goals for Vassar to stretch the margin to 10-2. Jaymie Arena (Hopkinton, Mass.) scored her first goal of the season for the Hawks with 1:16 left in the quarter to cut the deficit to 10-3 entering the fourth.

Vassar opened the final quarter with a player-down goal from Billings, but Roger Williams continued to battle. Shamberger scored three times in the fourth quarter, including a player-up goal, while Schmitz and Miranda Hayes (South Burlington, Vt.) also added scores in the period. The Hawks netted five goals in the final quarter, but the Brewers answered with five of their own to secure the 15-8 victory.

Shamberger paced Roger Williams with four goals, while Schmitz contributed a goal and two assists. Anthony, Arena, and Hayes each added a goal for the Hawks.

Vassar was led by Billings with four goals, while Kaltsas added three goals and an assist. Poirier chipped in two goals and an assist, and Elizabeth Burgess recorded four assists in the win.

Roger Williams (0-5, 0-0 CNE) will begin Conference of New England play on Tuesday, Mar. 17 against Johnson and Wales before heading to WNE on Saturday, Mar. 21.
