BRISTOL, R.I. — The Roger Williams University Softball team swept Hartford in Conference of New England (CNE) doubleheader action in Bristol on Sunday afternoon. RWU took game one 8-5 and game two 5-0.
Game One – RWU 8, Hartford 5
RWU struck first in the bottom of the second inning when RBI singles from Adrianna Amaral (Taunton, Mass.) and Hailey Williams (Vernon, Conn.) gave the Hawks a 2-0 lead. Roger Williams broke the game open in the third inning, plating five runs behind key hits from Madison Moran (Attleboro, Mass.) and McKenzie Foley (Hanover, Mass.), along with another pair of RBI singles from Amaral and Williams to extend the lead to 7-0.
Hartford responded in the fourth inning with a four-run frame, highlighted by a two-run home run from Anita Farkash and a bases-clearing triple from Priya Bedard to cut the deficit to 7-4.
However, RWU tacked on one more run in the sixth inning when Shannon Starratt (Lake George, N.Y.) drove in a run on a sacrifice to push the lead to 8-4. Hartford added one more run in the seventh, but it wasn't enough as Roger Williams held on for the 8-5 victory.
At the plate, Williams and Amaral each recorded two hits and two RBI, while Starratt added two hits and one RBI and Foley added a key double and RBI. Moran also contributed an RBI hit in the big third inning.
In the circle, Raegen Germano (Old Tappan, N.J.) earned the win, striking out five over four innings, while Sophia Bruno (Sandwich, Mass.) picked up her second save of the season with three innings of relief.
Roger Williams finished with 10 hits in the win, while Hartford managed three.
Game Two – RWU 5, Hartford 0
Keira Quadros (East Providence, R.I.) recorded a no hitter, striking out six, and marked 150 career strikeouts in game two.
After three scoreless innings, Roge Williams broke through in the bottom of the fourth. Madison Tucholski (Massapequa, N.Y.) delivered a two-run single to score Foley and Lucy Maurao (Holliston, Mass.), and Quadros followed with an RBI single to make it 3-0.
RWU added insurance in the fifth inning when Foley tripled to right field, driving in Starratt and Maurao to extend the lead to 5-0.
At the plate, Foley led the way with a triple and two RBI, while Tucholski added two RBI and Quadros helped her own cause with an RBI hit. Maurao scored twice and added a double.
Roger Williams totaled six hits in the win, while Hartford was held without a hit in the game.
Roger Williams (10-5, 2-0 CNE) will be back in action on Tuesday, Mar. 31 as they head to Curry for a CNE matchup. Hartford (8-6, 2-2 CNE) will head to Wentworth on Tuesday, Mar. 31 for a CNE doubleheader.
