CLERMONT, Fla. – The Roger Williams University Softball team dropped the third game of the season to Northwestern (MN) 4-1 on Saturday morning at Legends during Spring Break.
Ireland Strubbe picked up the win for Northwestern, pitching seven innings. Strubbe struck out six, walked two, and allowed five hits in the outing. Natalie Lundari (Flemington, N.J.) will hold the loss for the Hawks, pitching 4.1 innings with one strike out and four walks. Lundari allowed four hits in the outing, with Sophia Bruno (Sandwich, Mass.) relieving her and pitching 1.2 innings and allowing four hits.
The game stayed scoreless until the bottom of the fourth, when Northwestern struck first as a single and a walk helped them get runners on and in scoring position. Advancing on fielder's choices and throwing errors, Kacey Boschetti scored on a passed ball to give the Eagles the 1-0 lead.
The Hawks responded in the top of the fifth as Nicolette Fraser (Swampscott, Mass.) reached on a fielder's choice and Kayleigh O'Connor (Southington, Conn.) singled up the middle to give them two runners on. Hailey Williams (Vernon, Conn.) doubled to left field to bring one run around and level the score 1-1.
Northwestern would lengthen their lead in the bottom of the fifth, making the score 3-1 on a double and a string of singles. The Hawks wouldn't respond as the Eagles tacked on one more run in the bottom of the sixth to bring the score to 4-1 in favor of Northwestern.
Despite a single and a hit by pitch to get two runners on for the Hawks, they could not capitalize in the top of the seventh.
The Hawks' five hits came from Williams, Shannon Starratt (Lake George, N.Y.), and O'Connor. Starratt went 2-for-4 with a double and O'Connor went 2-for-3 on the day.
Roger Williams (1-2, 0-0 CNE) will be back in action on Saturday afternoon in Clermont, Florida at Legends against Penn State Brandywine at 12:15pm.
