CLERMONT, Fla. – The Roger Williams University Softball team used a big second inning rally to defeat Penn State Brandywine 9-4 on Saturday at Legends Way in Clermont, Florida on Spring Break.
The Hawks broke the game open with a six-run second inning, taking advantage of several Penn State Brandywine errors. An error allowed the first run to score before Skye Merrow (Hudson, N.H.) added an RBI single. Alexia Tsonis (New Bedford, Mass.) followed with her first collegiate hit, a two-run single, and Lucy Maurao (Holliston, Mass) drove in two more with a single that was misplayed, giving Roger Williams a 6-0 lead.
Penn State Brandywine answered in the third when Ava Craddock tripled to right field, driving in Kaylee Mushinski and Emma McElroy to cut the deficit to 6-2. Roger Williams added another run in the fourth on an RBI single from Tsonis to bring their lead to 7–2.
The Lions closed the gap in the fifth as Ava Rodgers doubled down the left field line to score two, pulling Penn State Brandywine closer as they trailed 7-4. The Hawks responded again in the bottom of the inning. Merrow drove in a run with a single to right field, and McKenzie Foley (Hanover, Mass.) added a sacrifice fly to extend RWU's lead to 9-4.
Roger Williams finished with 12 hits in the win. Tsonis led the way with two hits and three RBIs, while Merrow added two hits and two RBIs. Hailey Williams (Vernon, Conn.) was selective at the plate going 1-for-2 and drawing two walks.
Raegen Germano (Old Tappan, N.J.) earned the win in the circle, allowing four runs over 4.2 innings with three strikeouts. Keira Quadros (East Providence, R.I.) recorded the save, her first of the season, with 1.1 scoreless innings of relief.
Isabella Hurta took the loss for Penn State Brandywine, allowing nine runs (five earned) in 4.2 innings of work.
Roger Williams (2-2, 0-0 CNE) will be back in action on Monday in Clermont, Florida at Legends against Lasell at 9:00am and then John Melvin Christian at 1:45pm.
