MILTON, Mass. - The Roger Williams University Baseball team defeated Curry, 13-1, on rainy Wednesday afternoon in a Conference of New England (CNE) tilt at Jack Valley Diamond.
Matthew Donovan (Stoneham, Mass.) moved to 3-1 on the year, pitching a complete game, throwing 7.0 innings, with five strikeouts, while allowing three hits, and three walks, with one run allowed. Curry's Jack Keane took the loss, falling to 1-1 on the season, starting the game, throwing 3.1 innings with seven earned runs, eight total, and three hits, and three strikeouts with one walk.
Third baseman
Luke Miele (Wellesley, Mass.) had three RBIs on a three-hit day, going 3-for-4 at the plate with a double.
Casey DeLorenzo (East Greenwich, R.I.) also brought in three, going 2-for-4, while coming around to score twice, while
Noah Hester (Old Saybrook, Conn.) also tallied a hit, with two RBIs in the game. Playing right field,
Griffin Ruffner (Exeter, N.H.) went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and drew a walk.
Curry saw Jorge Rodriguez, Anthony Figueroa, and Nick Krise pick up hits in the game, while Krise tallied the lone RBI in the game for Curry.
After three scoreless innings to open the game, the Hawks struck first, producing a nine-run fourth inning, to secure the win. With runners on the corners,
Will Florio (San Jose, Calif.) reached after an error by the left fielder, allowing Miele to come in from third to take the first lead of the game, 1-0.
Two batters later, DeLorenzo tallied a pair of RBIs as he hit a knock to right center field, bringing in Florio and
Sam Arcieri (Westwood, N.J.) from second and third, respectively. After Dimaso was hit by a pitch, the following batter, Ruffner, took advantage, hitting a single to second base, and then advanced on a passed ball, the next batter,
Braeden Ventura (Swansea, Mass.)
, and then DeLorenzo came home.
Leading 5-0, Miele, who led off the fourth inning, was able to hit a double to right field, bringing in two more runs, followed by an infield single by
Jack Tubman (Belingham, Mass.)
, who put the Hawks up by 8-0, with one out in the inning. Arcieri then hit a sacrifice fly to cap off the scoring in the top of the fourth.
The Hawks expanded their lead in the top of the fifth as DeLorenzo hit an RBI single to left, and Miele drew a bases-loaded walk to score DeLorenzo later in the inning. Leading by 11 heading into the top of the seventh, the Hawks saw
Noah Hester hit a single to center field, bringing in the final two Hawk runs of the game.
The bottom half of the inning saw Krise hit an RBI single to center, as Figueroa came across for the lone blemish in the score column for Donovan.
Roger Williams (8-8, 2-2 CNE) is scheduled to host UMass Boston on Thursday, Apr. 2, at 3:30 pm. The Hawks will then host Hartford on Saturday, Apr. 4, beginning at 12:00 pm for a CNE doubleheader.
