Baseball: Hawks Sweep Fighting Scots in CNE Doubleheader

WENHAM, Mass. – The Roger Williams University Baseball team swept Gordon in Conference of New England doubleheader action on Saturday. The Hawks took game one 8-6 and won game two 11-6.

Game One: RWU 8, GORDON 6

Gordon struck first in the bottom of the second, as two back-to-back fielding errors put two runners on. Blake King hit an RBI single to second base to put the Fighting Scots on the board. Cael Smith then reached on an error to bring in another run to put Gordon ahead 2-0.

The Hawks responded in the top of the third as Devin Driscoll (Portsmouth, N.H.) drew a walk and Luke Miele (Wellesley, Mass.) moved him to third on a single to left. Noah Hester (Old Saybrook, Conn.) grounded out to second to score Driscoll and move Miele to third, before Braden Ventura (Swansea, Mass.) reached on a throwing error to score Miele, leveling the score at 2-2. Sam Arcieri (Westwoord, N.J.) reached on a throwing error and scored Ventura to put the Hawks ahead 3-2. Casey DeLorenzo (East Greenwich, R.I.) then singled through the left side to score Arcieri, before Will Florio (San Jose, Calif.) walked to put two more on for the Hawks. Nick Dimaso (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) singled to right field to score DeLorenzo and lengthen their lead to 5-2.

The Fighting Scots tacked on one more run in the bottom of the third. CJ Massella singled, then advanced to second on a ground out and stole third to put himself in scoring position. Aaron Ferreira then singled to score Massella and moved Gordon's deficit to 5-3.

Roger Williams put up another run in the top of the fourth as Hester bunted to third to get on before Ventura was hit by a pitch to move Hester to scoring position. Arcieri hit an RBI single through the left side to keep the Hawks ahead 6-3.

Gordon added another in the bottom of the fourth, as a throwing error put Blake King on second, and a fielding error scored King to move the deficit to 6-4.

The Hawks responded with another run in the top of the fifth. Dimaso was hit by a pitch before Jack Tubman (Bellingham, Mass.) hit a single to put two on. Driscoll then hit an RBI single up the middle to keep the Hawks ahead 7-4.

RWU extended their lead in the top of the eight, as Hester bunted on and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Ventura reach on an error to move Hester to third, before Arcieri singled to left field to score Hester and put the score at 8-4.

The Fighting Scots added one more run in the bottom of the ninth, but would drop the game 8-6.

On the mound for the Hawks, Louie Mosca (Old Tappan, N.J.) would pick up the win. Mosca struck out three, walked four, and allowed for six hits in 5.0 innings of work. Tyler DiCecco (Rumford, R.I.) would take the save, striking out two and walking one in 2.0 innings of work.

For the Fighting Scots, Kevin Whalen took the loss. Whalen pitched 4.0 innings, striking out two, walking two, and allowing eight hits.

Roger Williams collected 13 hits in the contest. Leading the Hawks, Hester went 3-for-6 with an RBI and scored two runs, while Arcieri had two hits and two RBI.

Gordon had nine hits, being led by Massella who went 2-for-4 and scored a run. Tyler Wilson had one hit and scored three runs.

Game Two: RWU 11, GORDON 6

The Fighting Scots took no time getting on the board in game two, as Carter Shin and Cam Wilbur both hit solo homeruns to put Gordon ahead 2-0 in the bottom of the first.

Roger Williams leveled the score at 2-2 in the top of the second inning. A pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases for the Hawks before Cam Willis (Georgetown, Mass.) drew another walk to bring in one run. The second run came on a wild pitch.

Gordon tacked on two more in the bottom of the second, as a leadoff double and then failed pick off attempt put Aaron Ferreira on third. King then reached on an error to score Ferreira. King moved to third on a single and a ground out, before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Shin to put the Fighting Scots ahead again 4-2.

RWU scored two to tie the game again at 4-4 in the top of the fourth. Florio hit a leadoff single before Willis drew a walk to put two on. Driscoll knocked an RBI single through the right side, before Hester flied out to center to score Willis.

The Fighting Scots pulled ahead yet again in the bottom of the fourth, as a single, a walk, and bunt loaded the bases. Gordon scored one on a fielder's choice and another on a single to first to move ahead 6-4.

Roger Williams added another run in the top of the fifth to bring the deficit to 6-5. The Hawks then broke the game open in the top of the sixth, as Tubman hit a three-run homerun to center field to put the Hawks ahead 8-6.

The Hawks stuck again in the top of the eighth, as a leadoff single from Ventura and back-to-back walks loaded the bases. Tubman grounded out to second to score one, before Florio notched a two RBI single to left field to put the Hawks ahead 11-6.

RWU would keep Gordon at bay for the rest of the game to secure the win.

DeLorenzo would scoop up the win in relief for the Hawks, striking out two and allowing three hits over 5.0 innings pitched.

For Gordon, Matt Pancurak picked up the loss, striking out one and allowing four runs on two hits in 2.0 innings pitched.

The Hawks had 12 hits and one home run on the day. Tubman led the Hawks, going 2-for-4 with a three-run home run and four RBI. Florio went 2-for-4 with two RBI and Arcieri went 2-for-3 and scored three runs.  

Gordon collected eleven hits in the contest. Shin went 2-for-4 with three RBI to lead the Fighting Scots.

Roger Williams (11-12, 4-5 CNE) will host Curry on Tuesday, Apr. 14, before hosting WPI for senior day on Thursday, April 16.
