Women’s Lacrosse: Hawks Roll Past Curry, 18-3

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Lacrosse team delivered a dominant performance on Wednesday afternoon, defeating Curry, 18-3, in Conference of New England (CNE) action at Bayside Field. 

Roger Williams wasted no time setting the tone, jumping out to a 4-1 lead after the first quarter behind two goals from Jamie Anthony (Somers, Conn.) and goals from Miranda Hayes (South Burlington, Vt.) and Molly Schmitz (Hamden, Conn.).

The Hawks continued to build momentum in the second, with Lauren Canata (West Springfield, Mass.) scoring on a pass from Mikayla Fey (Bethlehem, Pa.). Canata score again to push the Hawks lead to 6-1. Curry responded with one as Samantha Sprissler scored, before Canata converted a pass from Allie Shamberger (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) to extend the lead to 7-2 heading into halftime.

The third quarter proved decisive, as Roger Williams erupted for eight goals in a dominant stretch that broke the game open. Anthony and Shamberger led the charge with three goals a piece in the frame, while Canata score two to push the Hawks' advantage to 15-2.

Curry would open the fourth with a goal from Ella Palanza, but Roger Williams continued to control play in the fourth quarter. The Hawks added three more goals, including tallies from Canata, Mollee Merritt (Cheshire, Conn.) and Noelle Finucane (Marshfield, Mass.), to seal the 18-3 victory.

Canata led all scorers with six goals and one assist, while Anthony added five goals and controlled the draw with eight on the day. Shamberger contributed three goals and three assists, and Merritt added a goal and an assist in the win.

Defensively, the Hawks limited Curry to just 10 shots on goal and forced 17 turnovers, while holding the Colonels scoreless in the third quarter. In net, Aizza Chase (Cohasset, Mass.) made seven saves to earn the victory. 

Roger Williams held advantages in shots (44-18), ground balls (26-11), and draw controls (15-7), showcasing a complete team effort from start to finish. 

Roger Williams finishes the regular season at 9-8 overall and 8-2 in conference play, as they look to keep their momentum into the postseason.
