Box Score NORTON, Mass. – The Roger Williams University Baseball team fell in heartbreaking fashion to Wheaton (Mass.), 6–5, on Sunday afternoon at Sidell Stadium after the Lyons scored twice in the bottom of the ninth to complete the comeback.
Roger Williams jumped out to an early lead in the second inning. After Jack Tubman (Bellingham, Mass.) reached on an error and Casey DeLorenzo (East Greenwich, R.I.) singled, Elvin Espinal (Union, N.J.) drove in the game's first run with an RBI single. Moments later, Rory Lynch (Easton, Conn.) doubled down the left-field line to bring home another run and give the Hawks a 2–0 advantage.
The Hawks added to their lead in the third when Tubman launched a solo home run to left, extending the advantage to 3–0.
Wheaton responded in the bottom half of the third, using a sacrifice fly, an RBI triple, and a run-scoring single to tie the game at 3–3. The Lyons then took their first lead in the fourth inning on an RBI double, making it 4–3.
Roger Williams answered in the fifth as Luke Miele walked and later scored on an RBI single by Noah Hester (Old Saybrook, Conn.), evening the game at 4–4.
After several scoreless innings, the Hawks regained the lead in the ninth. Sam Arcieri (Westwood, N.J.) worked a leadoff walk, advanced into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Miele and eventually came around to score on a wild pitch to give Roger Williams a 5–4 edge.
However, Wheaton responded in the bottom of the inning. A walk and a pair of singles loaded the bases before Collin Reilly delivered a two-run single to center field, scoring the tying and winning runs to secure the 6–5 victory for the Lyons.
Offensively, Roger Williams totaled 10 hits, with Hester leading the way with two hits and an RBI. Tubman added a home run and two runs scored, while Espinal and Lynch each drove in a run.
On the mound, Branden Steinberg (Schuylerville, NY) started and allowed three runs over 2.2 innings, while Dylan Brenner (Andover, Mass.) took the loss after allowing the game-winning runs in the ninth inning.
Roger Williams will look to bounce back at home on Apr. 28 against Johnson & Wales at 3:30 PM.
