NEWPORT, R.I. — Chloe Watson (Bethlehem, Pa.) scored in the closing seconds of the first half as the Roger Williams University women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw at Salve Regina on Wednesday in a non-conference matchup.
The Hawks remained unbeaten at 2-0-4, while the Seahawks moved to 1-1-3.
Roger Williams held a 22-8 advantage in shots and an 8-4 edge in corner kicks. Mya D'Antonio (Marshfield, Mass.) led the Hawks with five shots, while Beth Yucius (Duxbury, Mass.) added four, including three on goal. Watson finished with two shots on target and her second goal of the season.
Ava Boenig (Norwich, Conn.) recorded three saves for Roger Williams, with Lizzy Thompson (Holland, Mass.) adding one. Sarah Fogarty (Scituate, Mass.) also contributed a defensive save. Salve Regina's Sabrina Lawless made 11 saves in relief of Emelia DaPonte, who stopped three shots.
The Hawks generated sustained pressure throughout the opening half, recording 16 shots. Fogarty helped keep the match scoreless early, clearing a Paige Jessuck header in the eighth minute.
Roger Williams broke through with 18 seconds remaining before halftime. Following consecutive saves on attempts by Yucius and D'Antonio, Watson found the net at 44:42 to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead.
The advantage held until the 85th minute, when Allison Gallagher scored off an assist from Jessuck at 84:10 to pull the Seahawks even.
Roger Williams created two late opportunities to regain the lead. Isabella Vena (Haverhill, Mass.) had a shot saved in the 88th minute, and Fogarty sent a header wide following a corner kick.
Roger Williams returns to Bayside Field on Saturday, Sept. 19, hosting Western New England at 12 p.m. in Conference of New England action.
