BRISTOL, R.I. — The Roger Williams University Women's Tennis team opened the 2026-27 season with a 6-1 victory over Simmons University on Wednesday afternoon at the RWU Tennis Courts.
Roger Williams swept the three doubles matches to secure the opening point before winning five of the six singles flights. Simmons fell to 0-1 with the loss.
Valentina Abarca (Riobamba, Ecuador) and Iris Gkrekou (Athens, Greece) earned a 6-4 victory at No. 1 doubles, while Megan Bache (Westbrook, Conn.) and Adriana Palmieri (Southington, Conn.) collected a 6-4 win in the No. 2 flight. Ella Mancini (Middlebury, Conn.) and Claire Dwyer (Manchester, Maine) completed the sweep with a 6-2 victory at No. 3.
Mancini opened singles competition with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Grace Burke at No. 5. Palmieri followed with a 6-0, 6-0 win against Ivy Cote at No. 4 before Gkrekou clinched the team victory by defeating Amoli Vad, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 3.
Dwyer topped Victoria McCrann, 6-1, 6-3, in the No. 6 flight. Abarca closed the match with a comeback victory at No. 1, rallying past Masha Shutts, 1-6, 7-5, 10-8.
Lapointe secured Simmons' lone point by defeating Bache, 6-2, 4-6, 10-7, at No. 2 singles.
Roger Williams (1-0, 0-0 CNE) will host Bridgewater State on Thursday, Sept. 3, at 4:00 pm.
